November 12, 1892 - William "Pudge" Heffelfinger of Allegheny Athletic Association (AAA) was the first professional football player. He received $500 for his game against Pittsburgh Athletic Club (AAA). Score 4-0.

1893 - Grant Dibert was the first football player to sign a pro football contract. He signed with the Pittsburgh Athletic Club.

1912 - A scoring change happened, making a touchdown worth6 points vs. 5 points.

1919 - Green Bay Packers were born. In their inaugural season, the Packers went 10-1.

June 24, 1922 - Birth of the NFL

1922 - The Chicago Staley's became the Chicago Bears

1932 - The NFL began keeping official statistics.

1933 - New rules were established in NFL. Some included: inbound lines, hash marks, goal posts, and goal lines. The foward pass became legal from anywhere behind the line o f scrimmage.

1939 - NFL was televised on NBC for the first time. The Brooklyn Dodgers played the Philadelphia Eagles.

1949 - For the first time in history, the NFL had two 1,000-yard rushers in the same season. Steve Van Buren for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Green Bay Packers' Tony Canadeo.

October 2, 1950 - Bob Shaw set an NFL record with five touchdown catches as the Chicago Bears defeated the Baltimore Colts 55-13. The mark has since been tied by Kellen Winslow in 1981 and Jerry Rice in 1990.

1953 - Star halfback, Jim Thorpe, died at age 64. Thorpe played well past his prime until age 41, retiring in 1928. Excelling at nearly every sport he played, Thorpe is one of two men in history who played for both the New York football (running back) and the baseball (outfielder) Giants.
